Picasso's arresting "Weeping Woman" bleeds off the cover in this new book from the series celebrating the NGV. Sixty-five works are detailed and 15 curators and academics have written the notations. The NGV, which has been acquiring modernist and contemporary art in the second half of the 20th century, owns such important pieces as Bacon's "Study from the human body," Hockney's "The second marriage," and Warhol's "Self Portrait no. 9." Magritte, Delaunay, Bonnard, Modigliani, Cucchi, Clemente, Kiefer, Richter, Flack, Rothko, Scully, Guston -- the French, British, Italians, German, Americans -- are represented. Purple, green, and fuschia end papers echo the contemporary spirit.
