This catalogue accompanied the first East Coast exhibition of the photographs of Horace Bristol, one of the first staff photographers for Life magazine. Bristol collaborated with author John Steinbeck on a project documenting the plight of migrant workers in California; this project was the impetus for Steinbeck's classic The Grapes of Wrath. During World War II, Bristol traveled with Edward Steichen to document the Pacific battles; he remained in Japan after the war to cover the country's reconstruction. The catalogue includes an introductory essay by Bristol; a biographical essay by museum director William U. Eiland; a scholarly essay by Patricia Berman, professor of art history at Wellesley College; and a complete catalogue of the exhibition.
