Carving the Mountain-The Marble Quarries of Carrara

.:Description

This book is a collaboration between a renowned British sculptor and an Italian photographer. "Carving the Mountain" is about the 'idea' of stone, its origins and history. It takes us to one of the great sources of our western culture and history: the part of the Alps where Rodin, Michelangelo and Canova quarried stone, and which is still used by sculptors today. The images and texts unveil the quarries poetically, geologically and technologically, showing how time and man's intrusion have affected these landscapes. "Carving the Mountain" redraws the map and asks, what is being formed, and what destroyed?
