  1. 64 essential guides, tips and tutorials to definitely master Photoshop like a pro

    Leave a Comment

    Photo frames

    I’ve been compiling Photoshop resources for about nine years for this site, always focusing on specific subjects. Some of these compilations became very popular, such as The best 80 text effects on the web, 100 wonderful Photoshop photo effects tutorials, or 40 Extravagant Surreal and Fantasy Scenes Photoshop Tutorials, to mention just a few of them. But all of them turned out to be constrained to a single subject, be it a very general one or to something more specific such as 30 Fascinating Video Game Inspired Photoshop Tutorials and Brushes, or Spectacular Superheroes Themed Photoshop Tutorials.

    What about learn how to actually use Photoshop? There are hundreds of resources that teach you how to master the different Photoshop tools or commands. You probably never noticed many of those just because they look boring and have no flashy images to capture your attention. But believe me that these tutorials can teach you some unbelievable tricks that will ease your way to become a Photoshop pro.

    It is true that Photo Effects is perhaps the most popular Photoshop topic today. And it is also true that after we applied an effect to a photo, we are tempted to “wrap it up” like a gift.

    Adding frames to photos is a way to enhance the image in an artistic way. This article is a selection of some beautiful frames, edges and borders Photoshop resources you can apply to your photo albums.

  6. 15 Fantastic and Absolutely Free Photoshop Plugins

    Two years ago I wrote some articles and compilations about Photoshop plugins: How to apply a texture with Squizz Photoshop plugin, Create a wet and muddy rocks texture with FilterForge plugin, Programming Photoshop Plugins, 5 unique Photoshop plugins you should be aware of, and 3D plugins for Photoshop.

    This time, I decided to gather a list of 15 incredible and absolutely free Photoshop plugins. And when I mean free, I mean it. You can use them for your commercial projects. Of course, you cannot sell or redistribute them without written permission of their authors. These are only a handful of plugins that stood out from the rest. But there are lot more free plugins around there, and one of the best sources to find them is The Plugin Site free plugins list. I simply had to check each one from that list and decide which one was worthy to be included in this list. Enjoy it!

  7. Impressive Free High Resolution Textures and Backgrounds

    I’m passionate about textures. I’ve already published some compilations, such as 30 free paper backgrounds and textures at my Creative Closeup blog and 10 grunge, rusty and dirty tileable textures at this site.

    Now it is time for a new roundup of incredibly cool high resolution textures. These textures belong to different authors. All of them can be used in commercial projects, but it is safer to check the term of use of each texture before doing so.

    There’s an interesting book called Crumble, Crackle, Burn: 120 Stunning Textures for Design and Illustration that comes with 120 high resolution textures on a bundled DVD.

    There’s an amazing Photoshop plugin, FilterForge plugin, that lets you create your own textures plugins without coding a single line. You can download a fully functional version of Filter Forge and use it for 30 days. This demo version gives you access to their user submitted library of thousands of filters. Some time ago I wrote a tutorial about creating a wet and muddy rocks texture with Filter Forge.

    And if you want to know how to create some textures yourself, you should check the Textures and Backgrounds Tutorials section of this site.

  10. 40+ Special Effects Photoshop Actions

    Leave a Comment

    Considered difficult to master, actions are often overlooked by most Photoshop users. It’s true that actions are not as simple to use as layer styles or even as Photoshop plugins, and that the concept of automation has always be beyond the scope of most users.

    But if you take a closer look at Photoshop actions, you will find that they are easy to understand and can help you automate your hard work, such as applying a series of repetitive changes to a group of images, for example.

    An action no more than a recording of a series of tasks performed in Photoshop. Once created, you can apply that action on an image or a series of images. You can even make an action to create an image from scratch.

    The following list is a gallery of free special, color, photo and text effects actions ready to download an use in Photoshop. Although these Photoshop Actions are free, please read the terms of use in each download page.

  12. Horror, Blood and Gore Photoshop Effects and Brushes

    When I was a kid, I was a compulsive painter of punched eyes, missing teeth and bloody scars on almost every magazine or newspaper photo I found.

    Time passed by and I didn’t become a special effects makeup artist like Tom Savini or Rick Baker, but I still enjoy a nice horror movie with some decent gore and splatter effects.

    Lately I’ve been noticing that many Photoshop artists are mastering the horror makeup techniques and believed that it was time to gather a nice (er, sort of…) list of Photoshop tutorials filled with gore, splatter and blood. Some previews have been blocked just because the final effect was too explicit. Have some fun with your photos, but don’t scare your kid brother too much, please.

  17. Progressive Rock Logos and Albums Photoshop Brushes

    < ?php if (!is_single()) { ?> < ?php } ?>
    This is something I always wanted to do. I’m turning 44 this year and I must admit that I still listen to progressive rock with passion.

    And this is precisely what I love about Photoshop. You can turn anything you like into brushes and start writing about something that you normally wouldn’t, in your blog.

    Sadly, it was only when I started this brush set that I noticed that except for a couple of bands, no one had a steady logo over time. Even YES had different logos. But there were cases like PREMIATA FORNIERA MARCONI, KING CRIMSON, MOODY BLUES, and even JETHRO TULL, that didn’t even keep the same typeface on two albums. On the other side, groups like ELO, YES, GENESIS, PINK FLOYD and some others, at some point of their history, had very renown logotypes.

  18. Add a third dimension to your photos: 3D Plugins for Photoshop

    Leave a Comment

    < ?php if (!is_single()) { ?> < ?php } ?>

    Rumor has it that Photoshop CS3 will offer some 3D capabilities. There is no official list of features, but it seems that you will be able to open most popular 3D objects formats (objects, not scenes though…) and presumably, have access to thier color and texture properties. But as of this writing the only official word is that these 3D capabilities are not active in Photoshop CS3 beta preview.

    < ?php if (!is_single()) { ?> < ?php } ?>

    It’s Christmas time and, as every year, it is a good opportunity to provide some quality resources to my seasonal graphics starving visitors. Not much to say in this case. I built this list gathering some new (and old) Christmas related tutorials, brushes, cliparts and icons. I tried to keep a high quality standard, but in some cases you will find some simple, yet nice, resources that can be of a great help for a quick work.

    All these resources are free for personal use. Be sure to read the terms and conditions of each one of the resources site, specially when downloading free icons, before trying to publish anything on print or on the web. Click on each image to go to that tutorial or download page.

  20. 5 Unique Photoshop Plugins You Should Be Aware Of

    Leave a Comment

    It is well know that most designers daily Photoshop duties include the creation of an aqua or chrome beveled text, retouching a face, color correcting a photograph or, at best, the design of a nice background pattern to mention just a few. So, I’m pretty sure that you have managed to build a nice collection of Photoshop plugins for digital photography or special effects.

    But what if I ask you which plugin to use to create some 3d paper objects or perhaps a supernova explosion? Maybe I can go nuts and ask you a way to create a procedural texture filter without programming or a 3D foliage without using an external 3D program. And I’m positively sure that if I ask you to create a prototype of an interface with Photoshop you will laugh your pants off. Well, don’t laugh. You have to be prepared to the most strange request from your clients.

    The following list is a selection (in no particular order) of the five most uncommon and unique Photoshop plugins available that you probably never heard of. So, lets start with the list and let those strange requests keep on comming!

    Altia PhotoProto

    PhotoProto is a new, and as far as I know, never done before Photoshop plugin. It’s an unique concept that eliminates the pain of creating user-driven interfaces prototypes. From Altia’s web site: “…PhotoProto is a new Photoshop add-on that automatically transforms your Photoshop graphics into a working, interactive, user-driven prototype. Simply arrange and name your Photoshop graphics layers for buttons, screens and other user interface objects. Click on the PhotoProto menu and out pops a working prototype that you can instantly try or send to colleagues, users and executives. No complex scripting languages to wrestle. No new authoring environments to learn…”

    The following video will show you how to use this Adobe Photoshop Plugin to create a prototype.

    Filter Forge

    Filter Forge is also a newcomer and a truly winner. Imagine to be able to create your own filters without programming a single line of code. To good to be true. But it is.

    Filter Forge is a plugin for Adobe Photoshop allowing computer artists to build their own filters – seamless textures, visual effects, distortions, patterns, backgrounds, and more. The key features of Filter Forge include a visual filter editor and a free online library of user-created filters to which anyone can contribute. You can read How to create a wet and muddy rocks texture with FilterForge to know how to use this incredible Adobe Photoshop Plugin. Check some sample filters submitted by beta testers:

    Filter Forge is now in a rock solid and incredibly stable beta phase. You can apply as a beta tester, and if you submit enough good, popular and unique filters to their filter library, you may be able to gain access to a free copy of the product when it becomes commercially available.

    AVBros. PageCurl Pro

    PageCurl Pro is an new version of an extremely popular Photoshop plugin that has been around for a long time. The name can be a bit misleading and make you think that this plugin can only make page curls, which is an easy effect to do with Photoshop. Wrong! This plugin can do wonders with your images. It can fold anything, any way you want in a 3D space. It has a clear, easy to use and very responsive interface and the results are much more than outstanding. Let the images speak for themselves:

    >>> Read more about AVBros. PageCurl Pro

    Knoll Light Factory

    Another Plugin that has been around for many years and has managed to reamain the best in its area. Created by Photoshop co-creater and Star Wars effects guru John Knoll, Knoll Light Factory is one of the worlds most used graphics tools, used by 1,000’s to digitally simulate light effects called flares. Flares simulate reflections from a very bright light source as seen in a camera’s lens. You see them most often used in nature to simulate the sun, on text or logos to enhance their appearance or in special effects explosions. Take a look at these examples:

    >>> Read more about Knoll Light Factory for Photoshop

    Digital Element Verdant

    Verdant is a revolutionary Photoshop plug-in that allows users to randomize, rotate, scale, and place plants and trees in Photoshop. From Digital Element’s web site: “…The Verdant Plant Mechanic lets you build procedural 3D plants. This means that when you build one flower, Verdant can generate an entire bouquet! The Verdant Plant Mechanic employs simple primitives and gives you the freedom to make whatever plant you want…”

    The following images will give you a more precise idea of how powerful is this plugin.

    >>> Read more about Verdant

    Do you agree with this list?

    I’m sure that after making such an statement as I did here about the uniqueness (in my point of view) of these plugins, readers, developers and vendors would like to point a plugin that is unique in their point of view. Please, feel free to do so by leaving a message in the comments form below this article. I’m always willing to publish information that is valuable for my readers.

  21. Cool Photoshop Actions, Brushes and Textures

    Leave a Comment

    ith the time, I have been able to build a little collection of exclusive downloads such as Adobe Photoshop brushes, layer styles, backgrounds and other interesting stuff that some time ago was password protected and now is open to everyone.

    So I came up with the idea of creating a section in this blog where visitors could easily find these downloads. This initial post will showcase all the previous downloads available and from now on, each new download, made by me or created by an external designer or artist exclusively for The Photoshop Roadmap, will be announced in this section.
