Progressive Rock Logos and Albums Photoshop Brushes

This is something I always wanted to do. I’m turning 44 this year and I must admit that I still listen to progressive rock with passion.

And this is precisely what I love about Photoshop. You can turn anything you like into brushes and start writing about something that you normally wouldn’t, in your blog.

Sadly, it was only when I started this brush set that I noticed that except for a couple of bands, no one had a steady logo over time. Even YES had different logos. But there were cases like PREMIATA FORNIERA MARCONI, KING CRIMSON, MOODY BLUES, and even JETHRO TULL, that didn’t even keep the same typeface on two albums. On the other side, groups like ELO, YES, GENESIS, PINK FLOYD and some others, at some point of their history, had very renown logotypes.

There is a great article about rock bands logo design at Intuitive Design’s blog: Top 10 Rock Bands Logos.
You can also download other rock bands logos at Grimpuppy.com and Brandsoftheworld.com (in vector format).

I’m sure that you will not fully agree with the list. Perhaps you may think that ELO and SUPERTRAMP are not progressive rock bands, and that CAMEL or CURVED AIR should have been on the list. Well, there are many reasons for those inclusions and exclusions, and to be honest it doesn’t matter. This is simply a Photoshop brushes set and not a TOP 10 or BEST OF list. Relax and have fun.

The images in these brushes are copyrighted and should only be used for personal, non-commercial illustrations.

Why Not? Progressive Rock Videos too!

When you are done painting with your brushes, you can watch some progressive rock videos from YouTube. Here’s a list that I gathered. If you would like to recommend a video, leave a message with a link to that video in the comments section below.

» Overture 10538 - Electric Light Orchestra

One of their best songs in my opinion. A very early ELO.

» Sylvia / Eruption - Focus

An awesome video of Sylvia and Eruption from Moving Waves album.
Great video quality.

» Echoes Part 1a - Pink Floyd

This is from Pink Floyd Live at Pompeii. Sound is great!

» Jimmy Page Live Guitar Solo (stairway to heaven) - Led Zeppelin

You wouldn’t believe how amazingly difficult is to find some decent classic Led Zeppelin video on YouTube. Search results are 99% stairway to heaven awful amateurish covers.

» Thick as a Brick - Jethro Tull

Aren’t they the greatest? I’m a huge fan of Jethro Tull. This live performance video shows Ian Anderson at his best.

» Knots & Octopus Features - Gentle Giant

Gentle Giant was an unique band, totally different from the rest. Great quality sound and music. Please, don’t skip this video!

» Baba O’reilly - The Who

This is footage from the film The Kids are Alrigh. Keith Moon is on the drums. He died that year during the sound edition of the movie.

» Pictures at an exhibition - Emerson Lake and Palmer

This is the full live presentation of Pictures at an exhibition. Sadly, Nutrocker is not on that video. But you can watch it here: Nutrocker live.

» I know what I like (from your wardrobe) - Genesis

Live performance, Peter Gabriel era.

» Yessongs - Yes

This is a list of videos with the full Yessongs concert. With the full version of Close to the Edge included. While listening to these songs, close your eyes and imagine some landscapes designed by Roger Dean.

» Hey Jude - The Beatles

And of course, The Beatles. This isn’t progressive rock, you say? Who cares. It’s the best song in the history of music. Ok, ok, don’t get mad, here’s the Rooftop Concert.

  1. Sorry to see that Sylvia’s clip is overtaken by these rude ELO guys ;-)

    1. is Dutch, and thus a bit proud of finding Focus here
    2. has a sister called Sylvia

  2. Hehe… I love focus. Yesterday I was listening to their new album Focus 9 New Skin. My mother in law and my sister in law are called Silvia (spanish version of that name) and they are great!
But that list is ordered in no particular way. How would you explain having the Beatles in the last place? :-)
